Japan posted a merchandise trade surplus of 185.7 billion yen in August, the Ministry of Finance said on Thursday. That beat analyst expectations for a surplus of 157 billion yen following the revised 377.9 billion yen surplus in July.
Trade imports were down 41.3 percent on year in August - in line with forecasts for a 41.6 percent annual contraction after the 40.8 percent decline in the previous month. Exports were down 36 percent on year, compared to forecasts for a 36.5 percent annual decline - which also represents the annual contraction in July.
Exports declined for the 11th straight month, while imports fell for the 10th consecutive month.
Japan's trade surplus with the United States was 272.9 billion yen, down 26.7 percent on year. With Asia, Japan posted a trade surplus of 695 billion yen - down an annual 30.2 percent.
