India is heading towards the worst drought since 1972, the year that reported a monsoon deficit of 23.9%, reports Economic Times quoting agency sources. The monsoon deficiency was about 20% till a week ago.
B.K. Bandopadhyay, of the weather office, said that until September 21, the country's rain deficiency was 22% and the total rain shortage could be around 20%. The deficient monsoon destroyed India's rice, sugarcane and groundnut crops and disrupted the flow of water into main reservoirs that are vital for hydel generation and winter- irrigation.
Bandopadhyay said that the country had witnessed bad drought in 2002, 1987 and 1979 when the shortage of monsoon was 19%. The country's monsoon season starts in June and ends by September-end, though late rains were often experienced in October.
