Wednesday, the Statistics South Africa announced that the consumer price index or CPI rose 6.1% year-on-year in September, slower than the 6.4% growth in the previous month. Economists expected an increase of 6.3%.
Food and non-alcoholic beverages prices rose 0.9% on an annual basis in September, while clothing and footwear prices climbed 0.2%. Transport charges were down 0.2%.
On a monthly basis, the CPI increased 0.4% in September, faster than the 0.3% growth in the preceding month. Economists were looking for an increase of 0.5%.
Economy is likely to contract 1.9% this year, but showed signs of recovery, the National Treasury said in its medium-term budget policy statement Today.
On October 22, the South African Reserve Bank had kept its key policy rate unchanged for the second consecutive month, the current repurchase rate at 7% per annum.
