Unemployment in Japan rose to 5.4 percent in June, an increase of 0.2 percent from May, according to government data released Friday.
The jobless rate was the highest since June of 2003 and just short of the record high of 5.5 percent set in April 2003.
The Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare also reported that household spending in Japan increased 0.2 percent compared to one year earlier while spending by wage earner households was down 0.9 percent on year.
Japan's Job-To-Applicant Ratio for June fell to 0.43, down marginally from 0.44 in May.
