Retail sales in Australia were up a seasonally adjusted 0.9 percent in August compared to the previous month, the Australian Bureau of Statistics said on Wednesday, beating forecasts for a 0.5 percent monthly gain. This follows a revised decrease of 0.9 percent in July and a decrease of 0.8 percent in June.
In seasonally adjusted terms, food retailing was up 1.8 percent, while household goods retailing added 0.9 percent, department stores were up 2.4 percent and cafes, restaurants and takeaway food services added 1.9 percent. Other retailing decreased 3.0 percent and clothing, footwear and personal accessory retailing had no percentage change.
By region, Queensland and Tasmania both were up 1.4 percent, while South Australia added 1.1 percent and New South Wales gained 0.8 percent. Northern Territory eased 0.7 percent.
