Chinese Manufacturing Activity Surges In December

Markit Economics reported on Monday that the China HSBC Manufacturing Purchasing Managers' Index stood at a seasonally adjusted 56.1 in December, up from 55.7 in the previous month. A reading above 50 indicates expansion, while one below 50 suggests contraction.

Manufacturing output reported growth for the ninth straight month in December, with respondents attributing the rise in output to a greater inflow of new orders. New order levels also increased for the ninth successive month, while the pace of growth was the fastest in four months.

Despite easing for the second month running, employment in the manufacturing sector expanded at its third fastest rate in survey history. Panelits cited increased production requirements for the rise in job creation.
