Japan's all industry activity dropped unexpectedly by 0.3% in December from November, the Ministry of Trade, Economy and Industry showed Friday. Economists had expected the index to rise 0.1% after a revised 0.2% increase seen in November.
Construction industry activity was down 0.1% month-on-month, reversing November's 1.8% growth. Industrial production grew 1.9%, while tertiary industry activity dropped 0.9%. At the same time, indices of government services dropped 0.4%.
On an annual comparison, all industry activity slipped at a pace of 1.6% compared to a 3.3% fall reported in November.
