Australia posted a seasonally adjusted trade deficit of 2.25 billion Australian dollars in December, the Australian Bureau of Statistics said on Wednesday.
That was better than analyst expectations for a A$2.4 billion shortfall following the A$1.7 billion deficit in November.
Exports rose 4 percent to A$19.77 billion in December, up from A$19.03 billion in the previous month.
Imports climbed 6 percent to A$22.02 billion in December, up from A$20.73 billion a month earlier.
