Wednesday, the Department of Statistics Malaysia announced that the consumer price index or CPI rose 1.1% year-on-year in December, compared to the 0.1% decline in the previous month. Economists were looking for an increase of 1%.
Food and non-alcoholic beverages prices rose 1.1% on an annual basis in December, while clothing and footwear prices fell 1.3%. Transport charges were down 0.9%.
On a monthly basis, the CPI increased 0.2% in December, slowing from 0.3% growth in November.
For the January to December period, consumer prices climbed 0.6% compared to the same period of the previous year.
