Wednesday, Japanese Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama named Naoto Kan as Finance Minister in the wake Hirohisa Fujii's resignation due to weak health.
Kan, 63, will continue his current post of deputy prime minister and will additionally serve as finance minister, Hatoyama told reporters. The Prime Minister said Kan has accepted the offer.
On December 28, Fujii was admitted to hospital for suffering high blood pressure and exhaustion. The 77-year-old veteran politician met Hatoyama Tuesday to apprise him of his health issues.
After taking charge in September amid pressing challenges such as recession, deflation, unemployment, and public debt, Fujii had struggled to formulate a budget for fiscal 2010. He was under pressure to keep up with the Democratic Party of Japan's election campaign promise to transfer public spending away from public-works projects and into schemes that will benefit struggling households.
