Wednesday, Australia's Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations said that its monthly leading indicator for employment dropped in February, after rising for seven consecutive months.
However, the DEEWR said it is too early to confirm that a slowing in the pace of employment growth below its long-term trend rate of 1.8% per annum is in prospect, because the indicator has fallen for fewer than six consecutive months.
The indicator dropped to minus 0.841 in February from a revised minus 0.781 in January. There is a tentative signal that cyclical employment has reached its trough over the past four months, the department said.
The Australian government foresees the jobless rate to rise to 6.75% by the middle of this year. In December, the rate stood at 5.5%. The country's statistical office is due to release labor market report for January on Thursday. Economists forecasts the jobless rate to rise to 5.6%.
