The U.S. trade deficit unexpectedly widened in the month of December, according to a report released by the Commerce Department on Wednesday, with the wider deficit coming as the value of imports increased at a faster pace than the value of exports.
The Commerce Department said that the trade deficit widened to $40.2 billion in December from $36.4 billion in November. The wider deficit came as a surprise to economists, who had expected the deficit to narrow to $35.8 billion.
