Markit Economics reported on Wednesday that the Germany services purchasing managers' index stood at a seasonally adjusted 52.2 in January, down from 52.7 in the previous month. A reading above 50 indicates expansion, while one below suggests contraction.
Services output growth has now been recorded for the sixth straight month, but the latest rise was only moderate and the slowest since November 2009.
The level of new work placed at German service providers was largely unchanged in January. Some firms blamed difficulties in stimulating client demand for the subdued growth in new work.
Employment levels in the services sector fell marginally and the rate of decline was the slowest in the current three-month period of contraction. Panelists cited cost cutting measures and reduced workloads as contributory factors for the latest round of job shedding.
Meanwhile, the composite output index, which is a weighted average of the manufacturing output index and the services business activity index, rose to 54.6 in January from 54.3 in December.
