The sale of new motor vehicles in Australia was down by a seasonally adjusted 3.4 percent in January compared to the previous month, the Australian Bureau of Statistics said on Monday, coming in at 86,636. That follows a 3.3 percent monthly gain in December.
By category, other vehicles were down 17.4 percent and sports utility vehicles shed 4.7 percent. Passenger vehicles were up 4.0 percent.
By region, New South Wales shed by 7.9 percent, while Queensland lost 6.3 percent and Tasmania fell 5.1 percent. The Northern Territory gained 14.0 percent, while Western Australia added 4.8 percent.
On an annual basis, new motor vehicle sales jumped 15.6 percent following the 17.2 percent increase in the previous month. Sports utility vehicle sales surged 29.8 percent, while other vehicles jumped 22.7 percent and passenger vehicles climbed 8.6 percent.
