Industrial production in Japan was up 0.5 percent on month in October, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry said in a preliminary report on Monday, posting an index score of 89.9.
That was sharply lower than analyst expectations for a 2.5 percent increase following the 2.1 percent gain in September.
On an annual basis, output fell 15.1 percent after the 18.4 percent contraction in the previous month.
Shipments were up 1.3 percent on month, while inventories were down 1.5 percent, resulting in a flat inventory-shipment ratio.
