U.K. Chancellor Alistair Darling said he is extremely concerned about the charges banks taking on loans to small firms.
In an interview with the BBC News on Sunday, Darling said the cost of loans seemed to have risen, despite the UK's record low base interest rate of 0.5%.
Before a meeting on Monday with senior bankers in Downing Street, Chancellor told the BBC that it is because banks had a duty to restore lending levels, the government rescued them and not "out of some charitable act".
He called for banks to rebuild their balance sheets, but at the same time, they also need to lend money due to the particular circumstances in the country.
