S.Africa Q2 Jobless Rate Rises

Tuesday, the Statistics South Africa announced that the jobless rate stood at 23.6% in the second quarter, up from 23.5% recorded in the previous quarter. A year ago, the jobless rate was 23.1%.

The number of people unemployed totaled 4.13 million in the second quarter, smaller than the 4.18 million in the preceding quarter.

At the same time, the number of persons employed totaled 13.37 million, down from 13.64 million in the first quarter. The labor force totaled 17.19 million.

The labor force participation rate stood at 56.3% in the second quarter, slower than the 57.5% seen in the preceding quarter. A year earlier, the participation rate was 58.1%.
