Thirty-eight percent of Americans said last week that the economy is getting better, even though they are spending less and job creation remains relatively flat.

Results of a Gallup poll released on Tuesday showed that views of the economy improved during the week of July 27 through August 2, gaining four percentage points from the previous week's measure of 34 percent.

This number is slightly improved from one month ago, when 35 percent said the economy was getting better and greatly improved from the same week one year ago, when only 13 percent said it was getting better.

The poll also showed that the number of people who think that the economy is excellent or good increased by three percentage points to 13 percent last week from 10 percent in the previous week.

The percentage of those who felt the economy was poor remained relatively flat, edging down to 47 percent last week from 48 percent in the previous week. There was a greater decrease in the percentage of people who thought the economy was getting worse, from 61 percent of people two weeks ago to 57 percent last week.

Despite the slight improvement in economic confidence, average consumer spending decreased from $65 a day two weeks ago to $53 day last week. The number is down 50 percent from the same week last year, when the poll reported average consumer spending at $106 per day.

Job creation and job loss remained relatively flat, according to the poll. Job creation improved two percentage points last week, rising to 24 percent from 22 percent in the previous week, while job losses decreased by one percentage point, from 26 percent to 25 percent.

Although these numbers are flat now, they represent a marked change from the numbers reported the same week last year, when job creation was at 34 percent and job loss was at 17 percent.

The poll was compiled through 1,000 daily interviews with adults from July 27 through August 2. The perceptions of the economy and consumer spending are based on random half-samples of 500 adults taken each day. The job creation and job loss results are based on another random half sample of 250 full and part-time employees each day. The margin of sampling error is plus or minus three percentage points.
