Japan's gross domestic product expanded by 1.1 percent in the fourth quarter of 2009 compared to the previous three months, the Cabinet Office said in a preliminary report on Monday.
That was slightly better than analyst expectations for a 1.0 percent increase following the revised flat reading in the third quarter.
On an annualized basis, GDP jumped 4.6 percent, topping estimates for a 3.5 percent increase after the revised flat showing in the previous three months.
Nominal GDP was up 0.2 percent on quarter, below expectations for a 1.0 percent increase after the revised fall of -0.5 percent in the third quarter.
