Non-farm employment in France declined 0.4% quarterly in the final three months of 2009, statistical office INSEE said Friday. This came after a 0.5% fall in the third quarter. Economists were looking for a 0.6% decline.
In the fourth quarter, 56,500 salaried jobs were lost, less than the 76,100 positions axed in the previous three months. Employment in manufacturing and construction were down 1.6% each in the fourth quarter.
Year-on-year, non-farm employment dropped 2.5% in the fourth quarter. Salaried jobs declined by 412,000 from a year ago, and the total level of non-farm employment stood at 16.02 million.
