Retail sales in Italy dropped 1.6% year-on-year in September, slower than the upwardly revised 2.4% decline in the previous month, the statistical office ISTAT reported on Wednesday. Economists had expected a 2.9% fall in sales. Sales in the food sector slumped 1.4%, while sales in the non-food sector slid 1.7%.
On a monthly basis, retail sales edged down 0.1% in September, in contrast to the upwardly revised 0.1% increase in the preceding month. Economists had expected sales to rise 0.1%.
