The U.S. Commerce Department said factory orders declined 0.8 percent in August. This followed a 1.4 percent advance in July and a 0.9 percent rise in June.
Excluding the transportation sector, factory orders advanced 0.4 percent in August. Leaving out the defense sector, orders slid 0.7 percent.
Durable goods, or items meant to last more than 3 years, experienced a 2.6 percent slide during the month, after a 4.8 percent increase in July.
Non-durable goods orders were up 0.8 percent.
