Chinese Minister: Focus On Dollar, Not Yuan

The world should focus on the stability of the U.S. dollar rather than the yuan exchange rate, China Commerce Minister Chen Deming said Wednesday.

According to excerpts of an interview with the International Herald Tribune and Reuters, posted on the Commerce Ministry Web site, Chen said the U.S. dollar needs to remain stable for the global economy to gain a sustainable recovery. Moreover, the minister said a stable yuan exchange rate is vital for the global economic recovery. He also said China will continue to improve the yuan exchange rate mechanism.

On the Dubai World issue, Chen said it is an evidence of lingering uncertainties in the global economy.
