Friday, a report by the British Bankers' Association said the number of mortgages approved for house purchase stood at 42,088 in September, up from 40,841 in the previous month. From a year earlier, this represents an increase of 76.8%.
"Numbers of loans approved for house purchase are back to levels last seen at the end of 2007 and that increased activity is feeding through to increased mortgage lending", the BBA noted.
The number of approvals for re-mortgaging totaled 21,282, declining from 23,506 in August, and was 59.6% down from the previous year.
"Mortgage lending by the high street banks is continuing to improve from the lows seen earlier this year and the number of house purchase approvals continues to recover", David Dooks statistics director of the BBA said.
"Housing market activity will depend, however, on more properties coming on to the market. Apart from property decisions, further symptoms of subdued consumer confidence are a reduced appetite for unsecured borrowing and more saving," he added.
