Retail sales in the United Kingdom increased 1.8 percent in July on a store-for-store basis compared to one year earlier, according to data released Tuesday by the British Retail Consortium.
The BRC report also said overall retail sales increased 3.6 percent compared to one year earlier.
The Consortium noted that the July 2008 figures were hit be changeable weather, making last July's figures weaker.
The sale of food slowed, reflecting lower inflation, BRC said.
Non-food non-store sales, such as online, mail order and phone sales, increased 20 percent on year.
