Tuesday, a report by Statistics New Zealand said there were five work stoppages in the June quarter, which were all strikes. This was higher than the two work stoppages seen in the March quarter.
The stoppages involved 497 employees, and resulted in losses of 607 person-days of work and an estimated NZ$126,000 in wages and salaries.
For the year ended June, there were 18 work stoppages comprising of 17 complete strikes and one partial strike. This is lower than the 30 work stoppages seen in the year ended June 2008. The statistical office said work stoppages in the year ended June 2009 involved 1,551 employees, and losses of 1,783 person-days of work and an estimated NZ$307,000 in wages and salaries.
