Indian government on Monday decided to release the comprehensive inflation data on a monthly basis, but the release on price movement of primary articles, including food and fuel, will continue on a weekly basis, reported the media.
Anand Sharma, the Commerce Minister, said the weekly data gets poor response, especially from the manufacturing sector, and added that the response could reflect true position when released on a monthly basis. The monthly inflation data is aimed at giving accurate change in prices of manufactured goods, where fluctuation is minimal.
The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs also decided to change the base year for inflation from 1993-94 to 2004-05.
