Australia posted a seasonally adjusted trade deficit of A$1.524 billion in August, the Australian Bureau of Statistics reported Tuesday.
The deficit was a decrease of 15 percent or A$259 million from the revised July 2009 deficit.
In non-adjusted terms, the deficit was A$1.722 billion, a 34 percent increase on the previous month.
The Bureau said exports of goods and services declined 2 percent or A$357 million. Non-rural goods exports declined 3 percent, rural goods were down 3 percent and non-monetary gold exports fell 1 percent. Services exports increased one percent.
On the other side of the ledger, imports of goods and services declined a seasonally adjusted 3 percent or A$615 million. Intermediate and other merchandise goods imports fell 10 percent and consumption goods were down 6 percent. Imports of non-monetary gold were up 118 percent.
