Shop prices in the United Kingdom eased 0.1 percent on year in August, the British Retail Consortium said on Wednesday, after adding 0.5 percent in July.
Falling for the first time since February 2007, shop prices were led lower by a slowing in the gains of food prices, which were up 2.3 percent on year after a 3.8 percent annual expansion in July. August marked the fifth straight month that the rate of inflation for food prices has slowed.
Non-food prices fell an annual 1.4 percent in August after shedding 1.3 percent on year in July.
Also on Wednesday, the Nationwide Building Society reported that its consumer confidence index climbed from 61 in July to 63 in August - marking its highest score since May 2008.
