The value of New Zealand's merchandise imports and exports both declined in July compared to one year earlier.
Statistics NZ reported Thursday that imports fell 20.9 percent on year and exports declined 7.3 percent compared to the year before.
Imports totaled NZ$3.34 billion while exports totaled NZ$3.18 billion.
The agency said the drop in imports was the second largest monthly fall since February 1993.
The overall trade balance for July 2009 was a deficit of NZ$163 million, or 5.1 percent of the value of exports.
Statistics NZ said the greatest decreases in imports came in the petroleum and products category and the vehicles, parts and accessories category.
