Tuesday, UK's Business Secretary Peter Mandelson urged China to take more responsibilities to bring the global economy back on the track of growth and said it should address human right concerns if it wants the 20-year EU arms embargo to be lifted.
In a speech in Beijing, Mandelson, who was previously the European Union's trade commissioner, said China should have more involvement in solving an array of pressing international issues. He added that the responsibility does not rest with China alone.
Mandelson is leading a delegation of UK businessmen to China from September 6 to 10.
Moreover, there is a need to rebalance the economy after the financial crisis and China should support the task by rebalancing its domestic demand and over-reliance on exports.
China was criticized for showing increased protectionism amid financial crisis as the government of the world's most populated country encouraged people to save money by reducing spending.
With regard to the EU arms embargo lifting, Mandelson reportedly said China needs to have a dialogue with the EU about political rights and freedom of expression in China. He added these things are worth to make an impact on the minds of the public and policy makers in Europe.
The European Union imposed arms embargo on China in 1989, in response to China's suppression of the Tiananmen Square protests.
