Canadian consumer inflation dropped in August from the previous year as prices at the pump fell, according to data released by Statistics Canada on Thursday. However, excluding volatile energy costs, consumer prices were higher on an annual basis.
Consumer prices fell 0.8% in the 12 months to August 2009, following a 0.9% decline in July.
The decrease was due primarily to a 12-month drop of 19.1% in prices for energy products, mainly gasoline.
Excluding energy, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose 1.4% between August 2008 and August 2009.
Nationally, gasoline prices fell 21.2% between August 2008 and August 2009, following a 12-month decline of 28.3% in July. Regular unleaded gasoline prices at self-service stations averaged C$1.01 per litre in August compared with C$1.27 per litre in August 2008.
