British Govt. Okays Council House Building Programme

Wednesday, UK's Housing Ministry gave the green light for work to begin building over 2,000 new council homes across the country.

Despite the recession this is the biggest council house building programme for almost two decades, the ministry said in a statement.

According to the ministry, 47councils, covering every region of the country, will receive a share of GBP 127 million government funding to help build these homes.

The decision is expected to create over 5,000 jobs in the construction industry.

British Prime Minister Gordon Brown said, "This is a key part of the Government's plan to continue to invest through the downturn to boost our economy and to Build Britain's Future."

"We have committed to use the power of Government investment to help Britain through the recession," Housing Minister John Healey said.

The Trades Union Congress supported the government decision. TUC General Secretary Brendan Barber said, "Local authorities must have an important role to play in addressing local housing needs."

'This funding will allow them to help many people across the UK get the decent homes that they so badly need," Barber said.
