The number of construction starts on new homes in Australia dropped in the second quarter, according to data published Tuesday by the Australian Bureau of Statistics.
The statistical agency said that total dwelling commencements amounted to a seasonally adjusted 30,411 in the second quarter, down 3.7% from 31,566 dwelling starts in the first quarter.
The total number of house commencements in the private sector increased 3.7% on quarter in the June quarter following a revised fall of 3.5% in the March quarter.
For the same period, the number of commencements of other residential building plummeted 22.9% on quarter compared to a revised 1.8% drop in the previous quarter.
Year-on-year, the total number of dwelling commencements were down 24.1% in the second quarter.
