The total sale of new motor vehicles in Australia was up a seasonally adjusted 0.3 percent on month in August, the Australian Bureau of Statistics said on Monday, coming in at 75,388. That follows a 6.9 percent monthly decline in July.
On an annual basis, new motor vehicle sales fell 6.2 percent after the revised 10.3 percent annual contraction in the previous month.
On month, passenger vehicle sales increased 1.0 percent and other vehicles increased 0.8 percent, while sports utility vehicles decreased 1.9 percent. On year, other vehicles decreased 16.5 percent, while passenger vehicles were down 3.8 percent and sports utility vehicles fell 1.7 percent.
By region, Tasmania recorded the largest percentage increase on month, rising 12.5 percent, followed by New South Wales, rising 1.5 percent. Victoria lost 2.1 percent and the Northern Territory shed 1.8 percent.
