Hong Kong's seasonally adjusted jobless rate for the period May to July stood at 5.4%, unchanged from the April to June period, the Census and Statistics Department said Tuesday.
Unadjusted, the number of unemployed persons increased to 213,800 from 203,000 in the preceding three-month period.
At the same time, the underemployment rate increased slightly to 2.4% from 2.3%. The number of underemployed increased by around 3,700 to 88,600.
Meanwhile, total employment decreased by around 900 persons to 3.5 million. The labor force increased by 9,800 persons to an all-time high of 3.7 million.
Hong Kong's Secretary for Labour and Welfare, Matthew Cheung Kin-chung said, "Although the labour market showed signs of stabilisation in the second quarter in tandem with the improvements on both domestic and external fronts, the unemployment rate will continue to face upward pressure as business sentiments remain cautious and employers are generally conservative in hiring new hands".
